One regular lament in recent years has been that experts no longer get the respect they deserve. Anti-vaxxers have won a serious following, particularly among well-heeled Californians. Opponents to TPP were depicted as being against liberalized trade, a supposedly retrograde position. Creationism is now taught in some public schools in the US. The press regularly depicts climate change denialism and objections to GMOs as more proof of a rising anti-science sentiment. And the mother of all rebellions against experts is the dreaded rise of populism, with the great unwashed public demanding more of a say, when technocrats argue that what the masses think they want is unachievable promises sold to them by unscrupulous pols.
